How's this for torque? This is a dyno of my car at low boost, conservative timing, and rich AFRs (see the chart for that). Notice it's putting down more than 200lb/ft at the wheels at just over 3000rpms. It tops out at 256 at 6500rpms.

MYTH-rotary engines are unreliable and tend to fail without reason
TRUTH-Rotary engines are extremely predictable animals. If they are properly cared for their lifespan should equal or exceed a piston engine. Their longevity depends on three factors:
--enough fuel to prevent detonation
--a well functioning cooling system
--timing that will not cause detonation
I've owned rx7s since 94 and I can't think of a failure that has not been due to a problem with one of the above. The real killer is the lack of understanding that owners, non-rotary shops, and even Mazda dealers have. It is not a forgiving animal.

MYTH-The stock sequential system is unreliable.
TRUTH-The stock sequential system is problematic, but it's not that bad. The system is very complex and is exposed to extreme heat. It operates using electricity, pressure, and vacuum-often all at the same time. Most people do not know how to trouble shoot the system. A dealer that worked on my friend's car replaced $3500 worth of parts before realizing a $40 solenoid was the problem. This could have been discovered with a simple bench test. As long as the car is cared for by a good rotary specialist, which there are many of, the sequential system is not a big deal.

MYTH-The stock cats have a short life span.
TRUTH-They are very durable as long as you don't remove the airpump. Regardless, I know a lot of people that have removed the airpump and still do not hear of many failures.

MYTH-The rx7 makes a great drag car
TRUTH-It is a good drag car, but an even better track car. With upgraded springs it pulls over 1G on the skidpad. It's a blast to drive in the twisties thanks to its light weight and low center of gravity. Frankly, I would never buy an RX7 if I wanted to drag race. There are many other cars that are just as fast and don't have all the idiosyncrasies.

The transmission can handle 500flywheel hp. 500 at the wheels, or roughly 600flywheel, is pushing it, but people have done it. You don't need that much power to make it go fast; it's a 2650lb car; With just 255flywheel hp the stock car does 0-60 between 4.8 and 5.3 seconds, depending on which test you look at.

I'm not aware of anybody that has dynoed an RX7 with a GT40R turbo, but there are a couple people that are in the process of installing them.

My friend has a GT3540 single turbo. His car produced over 400 rwhp and around 370lbft of torque on pump gas. Another one of my friends has a T78. His car produced 464rwhp on pump gas. They both get wheel spin at expressway speeds-it sounds cool but is really frightening when you're in the passenger seat.

Here's a couple pictures of my car. I'm not sure the link will work since the target is on another forum.

i read about rotary engines somewhere . they sound really cool and much more efficient that regular engines.

the new mazda Rx8 has a new rotary engine, its called RENESIS.

I though rotarys were less efficient because the "combustion chamber" was so long. Any one know? Its also too bad any one other then mazda will put money into the rotary. With like 1/4 of the R&D in piston engines this thing would be more awesome then its current awesome status.
