The SUVs built on truck frames are trucks. However, some SUVs are built on stiffened up car frames. Those are just overgrown cars.

suv is supposed to have the confort od a car but the security of a truck, just like the new infinity, it drives and goes loke a car and is more secure than a car, so u can call it a truck but i doen think its right....

I'm with Deth on this one :fadein:

Back to the original question:
Yes, SUV's are trucks. US carmakers used a loophole in US legislation, favoring light trucks with less strict emission and fuel consumption requirements, to convert their light truck models to SUV's and Minivans. Which were cleverly marketed and became an instant hit in North America.

hmmm interesting. i would say that an SUV is just a type of vehicle, unless it is a large vehicle (i.e. suburban, expedition, excursion) because the bigger ones are essentially trucks with room for more soccer balls..... :x :x
if it is a vehicle that was made with a truck chassis, its a truck but a lot of the newer smaller SUVs are in no way trucks (a chevy trailblazer, that suzuki thing)

Yes.
I work for the largest car dealer insurance company in the USA and SUVs, mini-vans, and pick-ups are all considered “light trucks”. So at least from an insurance point of view, which is all that really matters, they are all trucks.

I think SUV's have become big enough to be their own category.
