Z4M gets the current M3 engine, and the new M3 gets a slightly neutered V8 version of the V10 in the current M5.
oh really? damn...well thats cool

i wonder why they waited so long?
probably sales positioning. you don't want a Z4M to steal M3 sales. it would probably outperform the M3 too since it weighs less. this way the Z4m fills in the gap til the next M3 comes out.

that's my quess anyway.
interesting...i dont think its to fill the gap between the time
but its possible it gets the same engine just like the old M roadster got it

maybe i should get that huh? =) but thats the car you like

Well putting the 4.0L in there wouldn't neccessarily make the nose heavy, if they move the engine as far back as they can the balance between the front and rear would be a lot better, and anyways it's an aluminum block so it won't be horribly heavy either way. I really hope they do put the V8 in there!

It's worthy to note that in the new M5, the new V10 engine weighs the same as the old V8. With progress in engine development, it seems that just because it is a bigger displacement / more powerful engine the weight doesn't necessarily increase. So the Z4 M version may not be as bloated and heavy as you think if it does get an 8. Also, i've heard from a 'credible' source that the output on the new M3 is stated at 409 hp, and the coolest news is there has been an interesting development to help prohibit loss of power from the drivetrain. Any ideas ZfrkS62? Will post info ASA proven and hard copy.

The old M Coupe is a beast and a damn good car along with the standard coupe, i was never a fan of the roadster versions though.

I'm glad to finally see some serious effort being put in by BMW on this car. They've definately taken their sweet ass time making a true drivers car out of the Z4. And by the looks of it and what the "rumored" engines are it wont be one to dissapoint. Just wish they made a coupe version.

i agree... i hated the Z3.. thought it was the epitome of a bitch car.. on the other hand.. i love the Z4
Not the M Roadster. . .

Still the Z4's chassis is far superior than the Z3s so it should be able to handle a V8. But even if they just put the current 3.2L I6, it would still be an awesome M car.

I haven't heard or seen anything about it other than what we've been discussing here and what i've briefly talked to my field service engineer about.

When this does finally come out though and i get some material on it, i will let you all in on it. only thing i can think of, is they found an even more efficient way to get the power through the gear box. (fear not, BMW will never use the CVT). either they developed a new type of clutch and they are testing it in the MZ4, or they revamped the synchros and gears somehow. That's all speculation though.

To get the power out of a 4L V8 that you are saying you heard, i'm thinking the compression is going to be damn near 12:1 (S62 squeezes 11.3:1, and it has an extra liter of space to fill) this is going to be a trick engine for sure 8)

how could you tell? Yeah, i'm a service tech. Which is why i've been able to shut down those S54=shit engine debates pretty quickly It's alot of fun...until a module in a 7 decides it doesn't want to program and it takes out the entire audio system (current issue with the update programming software) then i want to drive them of the nearest cliff...which around here, isn't that close

No, lately, all rumours are saying V8 and looking at the competition(SLK55), V8 is the way to go, logical thinking
Also, Z3 had the same engine as M3 E36 and later M3 E46

Besides, nothing more you can do with the current M engine from M3 E46.

Im not expecting everyone to belive like me but remember I said it. If Im wrong I will send you one of my two nuts

^ Hahah, no thanks, You could keep your nut.

Yeah, like I said earlier in my post. I think that if you throw the I6 in there, the Z4 would not disappoint. I mean 333hp is pretty damn good. The 400hp V8 isn't bad either. We'll see.

/\ as light as the Z4 feels, i can only imagine how rapid the torque will kick you in the ass with the S54, let alone 400hp V8
