Honda HSC (new NSX) has been cancelled

From the July issue of Automobile magazine (not full text):

"Just when it seemed that the Acura NSX, Japan's aluminum-bodied supercoupe, was at last to have its first full makeover, word has reached us that Honda has had a change of heart and quietly has shelved all plans for the redesign. Translation: no new NSX."

"But with Honda reportedly having had trouble getting the HSC design to gel, the crunch came in April, when at a top-level presentation, principal decision makers from Japan and the United States couldn't agree that the HSC-based coupe had the right stuff to succeed. Honda is turning its attention to a new luxury coupe instead."

"For enthusiasts, it's a worrisome sign. First the CRX disappeared and then the Prelude. There might not be another S2000, and now the NSX has effectively been read its last rites.

Honda likely will continue to produce and evolve the NSX in small numbers as long as there is demand. But for a wholly new edition to kick Ferrari's butt, the moment seems to have passed. Sadly."

Anyway, this kind of sucks. I really liked the design of the HSC (except the rear end, it needed a bit of work) It's cool that they'll keep producing the current NSX, but if there was ever a car that needs to be redesigned and updated, it's the NSX. It's no doubt a good looking car as is, but after 10 years or how ever old it is, it needs a facelift.

Very sad the HSC was a nice design and keep the Honda sport mind alive, if they launch a luxury coupe instead then THEY SUCK !! There are enough luxury coupes which weight 2 tonnes with a 500 bhp engine and a 10 mpg, we want light, sports cars like the NSX

LoL, just as Honda is starting to do well in Formula 1 again, they cancel the NSX.

Shame they cancelled it, but maybe with time and more "successful" F1 experience they will come up with something better.

I hope that the S2000 will enjoy at least a few more years but it does seem as thought things dont look good for the NSX.

It's called marketing and research. Don't know if they make the right decision, but they wouldn't have built the HSC prototype in the first place if they hadn't in mind to produce it.

Companies build cars all the time that they have no intention of actually producing and selling them.

I don't think Honda will stay out of the performance car range for long. Eventually they'll be back with something.

Someone on temple of VTEC posted, in response to the story, this statement made by Honda CEO Takeo Fukui a few months ago:
"This type of commitment is also the reason we make vehicles like the Acura NSX and Honda S2000. The production volume is small. But the value is high - both for our customers and for the Honda engineers who develop these vehicles. And that is the thinking behind the HSC concept car that you can see at the Acura stand. This model will serve as the basis for the next generation NSX you will see within a few years. We are committed to achieve the industry best performance - no - rival - exists - for this vehicle."

This is probably some stupid rumor that the knuckleheads at Automobile heard and decided to publish. Given the recent success in Formula 1 (particularly the development that went into the new engine), and Honda's penchant for incorporating its racing engine technology into its road cars, the story seem a little unbelievable. Honda is a company built on innovation, and its sports cars are the ultimate expression of the company's abilities. It would be foolish to throw away such a glorious heritage.

damn that sucks, it looked like such a nice car. Its a shame honda is scrapping its faster cars, i mean the nsx-r is a beat of a car on the track and straight line. Very dissapointed about this, damn you honda!.....they are doing good in F1 for the first few laps before the engine blows up...guess thats not the sort of image they want to potray to road cars....

Now that there performing in F1 there bound to bring out some sort of new sports car weather its the HSC or not only the bean counters at Honda know!
