SL65 AMG Top Speed
I just wanted to tell you guys, AMS of Germany tested a stock fully derestricted SL65 at Nardo and achieved a true 215mph. I got my info from Mercedes Enthusiast, latest isue, news section.
St-Anger, can you confirm this?

Shees for some reason I figured it wouldn't make 200 even with the HAUS engine. Impressive

well, actually...did you know the SL65 has 604 horsepower with 738 foot pounds of torque?
what you may not know is the car has actually been de-tuned, it doesn't have 738 foot pounds of torque, it actually has 885 foot pounds of torque.
they had to de-tune it because they don't have a transmission strong enough to handle all that torque. In the future you will see the car with 885 foot pounds of back wrenching torque.
and as for the speed factor, i have yet heard of anything else about the speed other than from mercedes enthusiast...

Only in top end... and has been eluded to - what exactly is "fully derestricted"...???
MB has been known to play tricks with cars when setting such records, then later disclose that there is now way in hell they would allow a custmer car to be tuned in such a way and retain warranty.. - then it becomes a "tuner car" and all bets are off...

Very true answer RC45. An SL55 was clocked at 200 mph + during a german magazine comparative but AMG refuse to remove the limiter of the SL55, they just rise the limit to 186 mph.

The 65 engine is truly amazing. The only stock engine i know that is a bit stronger is the Brabus V12: 640hp, 1024nm (don´t know how many foot pounds of torque this is). But the SL V12 costs about 300.000€ in Germany while the SL65 "only" costs 200.000€... But Brabus has always been a bit more exclusive and therefore expensive than AMG.

I saw a Brabus on the way home through London, and I nearly fell over. For some reason it just looks so much better than the AMG.......and the AMG ain't no ugly duckling! RC is right, Brabus is not really 'stock' lol

Well they detuned it too, normally it had 1200 Nm
And I don't agree with some of the opinions posted here, I really doubt MB playes tricks....

Yes they do - I have a good friend in Houston that dumped his SL500 because of the games MB play - and has vowed not to go back... ever...

Maybe you should read the topic RC45. It's pretty much about top end and nothing else.

I read the topic... which I why commented the way I did... even when it's about "top end and nothing else" it is still a moot point if the manufacturer has to do some special tweak to achieve it and then exclude customers from the same option.
Why is this?
Because if the manufacturer is free to "tune' the car for records, they can then also claim any tuner firms numbers as "factory" because the tuned car is based on thei factory car.
Capish?
This would be like Dodge turnng around and saying - "Look the Viper is good for 240mph and 0-60 in 3s" - just because some tuned Viper runs that numbers... If the factory makes the call - they better be prepared to let customers do the same...
Do you get it now?

Come on for god's sake. You cant seriously say that you know that Mercedes does "special tweak" on their cars before they are tested. And the story about your friend is pretty lame as some kind of evidence for Mercedes overall behaviour.
Still I get what you are trying to say..
