Default Leman and GT racing, whats the difference?

i figured i post here since i would get tons of help with my answer.

whats the difference between GT (grand touring) races and Lemans races or gt cars and lemans cars? whats petite lemans? what determines a car from being in a gt or lm race?

i know very little about these types of races and cars that race in them so i wanted to get an education.

They are just different classes basically. GT cars are production cars that are obviously modified for racing. LeMans cars are the full on race cars, there are no production models. They are also known as LMP's (LeMans Prototypes).
What determines which class they go into is pretty obvious just by looking at the cars.

Here are some examples
GT:
Porsche GT3
Viper Corvette
Ferrari 360, 575

There are two different classes in LMP. The 675 and 900, they are seperated by their weight. Which is either 675 or 900 kilo's.
Audi R8
Bentley EXP
Dyson Lola

Go to www.americanlemans.com It'll show you all the differences and car restrictions.

Aren't there also two different classes of GT cars? The 550/575 and the 360 are not in the class as I recall it.

Dating back to 1923, The 24 Hours of Le Mans (Les 24 Heures du Mans) is one of the classics of auto racing. In terms of endurance racing, this is THE race to win to turn a driver's, team's, or manufacturer's name into a household name at domiciles worldwide. Part of the circuit uses the Bugatti circuit, while the rest is run on public roads.

The Petite Le Mans (Atlantic and American) series are basically endurance races that are around 12 hours long. Teams participating in the series include Audi, Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche and etc., these are the same teams that ran in the 24 Hours on Le Mans.

IIRC, the Mosler was made long bfore the Saleen, so it'd have to be the other way around.
