When GM's vice chairman speaks of an ultra-performance Corvette, we listen BOB GRITZINGER Posted Date: 6/29/05 General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz won’t confirm this car exists, but he is not saying it doesn’t. We first wrote about Chevrolet’s ultra-performance Corvette—dubbed Blue Devil, most likely to catch the attention of GM CEO and Duke Blue Devil grad Rick Wagoner—shortly before the sixth-generation Corvette debuted at the Detroit auto show in January (AW, Dec. 22 and 29, 2004). We asked Lutz about the car during a recent exclusive interview with AutoWeek. “Let’s just say [Corvette chief engineer] Dave Hill is not a guy who likes playing second fiddle to any high-performance car on the road,” said Lutz. “My guess is we’re going to find a way to do something beyond the Z06, that would be at a much higher price point, and which would compete with some of the leading high-performance cars of the world.” Lutz said the car may be delayed while the company focuses most of its engineering might on pulling ahead profit-making vehicles like its next-generation large sport/utilities and pickups. “But there is certainly no lack of desire on anyone’s part to establish the supremacy of the Corvette,” says Lutz. Spied on the Nurbürgring, Blue Devil appears to be living up to the earlier hype. Eyewitnesses said the car sounds supercharged, confirming reports the engine is likely a blown version of the Z06’s 7.0-liter V8, producing upward of 600 hp. Look for lightweight carbon fiber body parts to reduce weight to about 2900 pounds. Pricing will likely start somewhere around $100,000 if and when the car makes production in 2006.

Yeah - I saw this and doubt it really.

More likely just a blue Z06 doing laps.

As it is, the "regular Z06" is stiull an unknown quanitiy with it's Goodyear Runcraps - and 100hp extra without the tyres and weight reduction to go with it just places this car dead even with the current LPE TT.

one of the guys on corvetteforum.com swears that there is a blue devil built and hes seen it, but that its isnt for production. just kind of a test/show car kind of thing... whatever... i highly doubt gm will ever actually produce these. a one off is a real possibility though.

On a seperate issue, I think the blue looks much better for the Z06 than the yellow.

As for RC, u never know if GM want a car that could rival the Ford GT or something. (I know I know, the new Z06 is almost there, but ppl always think if they pay more they get more. So, if GM put a tiny something into the car and raise the price by a bunch, then they have something on the same level as the FGT )

i blame that directly on dealers, Ford should've had complete control on all deliveries, and sales. who wants to buy a car for 50,000 above MSRP????

second, 'beat in every way' ... well, i still prefer the looks of the FGT... and the mid-engine layout...

Oh - I still want one... but as a 23rd car The doors alone would bug me. I took not of how many times I choose a spot where I have door access and how often the "allocated door opening space" gets lost.

Not to point out something you might have missed. But a 100 hp gain and a loss of 300 lbs isn't just a small increase in performance. Thats Carrerra gt type numbers.
As stated before when the ford gt hit the shelf, i think a halo car is a bad idea from an economic stand point for the domestic companies. That being said, I have every confidence that both the new zo6 and this if they make it will be rediculous performance wise. One has to admit this is the one thing gm seems to get right.

As for if its just a blue zo6 doing laps, they said it was faster then the zo6...

We hear 2005 Le Mans class winner Jan Magnussen is turning faster-than-Z06 laps in the Blue Devil at Nurburgring.

I highly doubt all of this - it is pure crap if you ask me. Bogus spin for PR sake - Why do I say this?

Thats why

Plus there is no answer as to whether they have cured the valve train failures or the oil consumption.

Before GM goes off trying to to build a $150,000 car that will not sell at all (even less than the GT) they need to be able to release a semi stable version of the $65,000 car.

This has been debated to death before, losing 300lbs on the street cahssis is not easil;y accomplised - especially while they continue to use in essence a unibody on frame rail chassis setup.
