i can imagine all the rich geeks driving one of these things. they'll probably be able to tell you how the electronics work but have no idea how to open up the fuel tank

The function took some getting used to. After setting the system to maintain a distance of about 170 feet from cars in front of me, it took a lot of nerve not to apply the brake manually when I was humming along at over 90 mph and saw that traffic had come to a dead stop just a few hundred feet away. But in time I learned to trust the Distronic system enough to force myself to keep my feet flat on the floor while the car gently decelerated from high speeds to a dead stop -- without plowing into the car ahead of me.

This isn't geek stuff - this is stupid technology for technolgy sake.
We saw on TV how easily the system failed - and the consequences.
There you have it.
MB has initiated the push for the brain dead driver - just push the gas and turn the wheel - the car will brake for you.
Very stupid idea IMHO.

There's cruise control so you don't have to hit the gas and Nissan has lane departure system so turning the wheel can in theory be automated as well... so what else do we have to do in the car?
As for the S class vs. Prius argument. Geeks are too smart to do the math and see it doesn't save money at the end.

Alot of technology is made to ASSIST the driver. It's the driver's own fault for relying on this shit to drive for them.
