"Made in Canada" Chevy Camaro

Following rumors over the weekend, General Motors today announced that it will use its Oshawa, Ontario car plant to manufacture the new 2009 Chevrolet Camaro at the end of 2008. GM will immediately undertake a $662 million overhaul of the plant in preparation for production, the company said. The investment will transform the plant into a "state of the art flexible manufacturing facility." Oshawa has twin plants, one of which was scheduled to close in 2008 after GM announced major cost-cutting measures in late 2005. However, some media reports today are suggesting both plants will stay open, while others are indicating jobs will only be saved at one of the plants. Reports this weekend also indicated the Oshawa plant(s) would be used to build other new Zeta-platform cars, with output as high as 500,000 units per year.
