What is an E36 M3 Lightweight?
The M3 Lightweight (sometimes referred to as the M3 CSL) is a special version of the U.S. model E36 M3 designed for track driving. Approximately 120 were built between July and October of 1995 by BMW Individual (the division of BMW M responsible for special orders). These cars retain the stock 240-hp S50 B30 USA powerplant, though BMW claimed that all engines fitted to the Lightweights were tested to make sure they were operating at the top of the acceptable range. According to BMW figures, the Lightweight weighs 2,950 lbs., 225 less than the regular M3 coupe. All M3 Lightweights are painted Alpine White III (300) and include the following special features:
-Shortened 3.23:1 final drive
-Top speed limiter removed
-Aluminum doors
-Reduced sound insulation
-Stiffer springs
-M shock tower brace
-Forged M Double Spoke wheels (7.5x17-in. front, 8.5x17-in. rear)
-M3 GT front spoiler lip
-Standard M3 rear spoiler with integrated third brake light
-Chequered flag decals in BMW Motorsport colors on left-front and right-rear corners of bodywork
-"BMW Motorsport International" emblems on exterior door mouldings and interior sill plates
-manual BMW sport seats covered in black "Hurricane" cloth with red highlights
-Air conditioning delete
-Radio delete
-Tool kit delete
-Console Valet delete
-Carbon fiber-look dash and center console trim
In addition, the following items were offered as special-order options that could be installed by the dealer:
-M3 GT-style adjustable rear spolier (with integrated third brake light)
-Lower chassis X-brace (for added stiffness)
-Upper strut tower brace
-BMW M oil pan and dual-pickup oil pump
-Ride-height adjustable suspension
-Cross-drilled brake rotors
-Adjustable camber plates

for 10k $ you can get e36 Euro m3 with 3.0 or 3.2 engine
+ sell Radio,Air Condition - will return some cash!
+ for another 30k $ you can convert it into race car
Nothing so exclusive in that car, only price
no carbon pars, no Some special interior or exterior stuff.
+ ghey US engine
without throttle bodies...
fot that price I'll have e46m3 + e39m5

You could convert a base e36 m3 into better lighter and better handling faster car than this overpriced pice of junk.

Who would buy an M3 and drive it for 16k over 12 years duration. He should have just put the money to the stock market.

We really got shafted by BMW with the E36 M3's cheaper motor.
$40k for this seems way too much for what it's really worth. Sure it's a "rare" BMW, but come on.. I'd look for a Euro spec E36 M3 instead.. they didn't make a Lightweight version in Europe did they?

There some curious thing above
First of all, it doesnt sound extrange for me that the american specs M3 develops less power than the europeans although I thought that the M3īs specs were the same everywhere; In order to be clear, in Europe the specs were: the first version had 3000cc, 286cv and 5 speed gearbox, whereas the second version (which replaced the first one) had a 3200cc engine developing 315cv, and a 6 speed gearbox
In terms of a lightweight version for a M3 it does sound extrange for me because there are many rally drivers interested in this car (the car is almost as fast as a grN Lancer on tarmac in good conditions but the maintenaince and the car itself is much much cheaper), but they dont buy this car because its very costly to get it lighter, and the origin of the weight is the chasisīs weight which is very difficult to make it lighter

Hmm, it seems that the only thing people care about here is HP.
When it is proven again and again that horsepower is not the end all be all.

Originally the US Market wasn't even going to get an M3 because sales of the previous generation E30 M3 did not sell well, nor did the E34 M5. It was only after a campaign by BMWCCA that they finally decided to release one, but at cheaper cost than the Euro model.
They wanted to keep price around $35,000 USD. Because again they were worry that it would not sell. So that means that they got rid of the individual throttle bodies, and other costlier components.
In fact, in the 4 years that the E36 M3 was available it sold more than the Europeans did in 8 years.

I just think $40k is an unreasonable amount, unless you are a collector of course...

Here the prices are from 12k although there is a huge demand about the car; as a result, its not a reasonable amount at all

There are plenty of M3s that are around $10k USD as well. But you are not comparing apples to apples. I think $40k is some what reasonable considering the condition this car seems to be in (providing it is perfect), plus the fact that it is limited to 120 examples.
What about E30 M3s in the US costing about $15k with 200,000 miles on there? Is that reasonable? By most of your opinions that car is perfectly reasonable even if it has 200,000 miles. In fact my friend just pick one up last year with 80,000 miles for $17.5k USD. Perfect condition.

$8k, or how about this, buy a Civic for $2k drop a few turbos in there for another $2k and it will definitely be faster too. In fact, that entire package will only cost you $5k.

Wow, I didn't know that E39 M5s and E46 M3s are down to $20k USD a piece. If you are selling them, I would like to buy a few at that price too. Let me know.
