Yes, Kittinger jumped and went fast. But this article points to the attempt to break the sound-barrier.
Anyone have an update on his success?

If you do research on the kittinger attempt, he broke the sound barrier - could be wrong, but think they mention it in the youtube video.
...another 13 hours yet before the jump

Ok, so done my research, and sticking with my original comment
.. That Kittinger made an attempt on breaking the sound barrier - but didn't break it.
His final (and fastest) jump was from Excelsior 3 at 102,800 feet. He feel for 4 minutes, 36 seconds and reached a maximum speed of 614mph (988km/h).
|
Kittinger obviously had some of the biggest balls of the 20th century; I am just particularly keen to see the effects of breaking the sound barrier on the human body - and don't have basis for comparison as it has not happened yet.
Btw, to my knowledge the speed of sound is 770mph (1235km/h)

The attempt is postponed to Monday due to bad weather.

I think that's what it says?

Sound travels with diffrent speeds on different hights. Depends on density (pressure) of air. The bigger pressure of air the faster sound wave goes. On 10 000 m it is aprox 1000 kph but on the sea level its 1235 kph

well its known that when jets travel beyond the speed of sound they tend to grow a couple inches.. but once they are out of the barrier and travel at normal speeds they reduce back to there original size.
Just a quick edit.. What about his parachute.. whats it made out of.. would it hold together at those speeds?

you seriously think he will pull the tag for the parachute when he's doing ~1200 km/h haha that would be reserved for a maniac. i guess we will start to slow his descent somehow with his body, without snapping is neck that is...

I think the denser air will begin to slow him down more, kind of like in the video about the 1960's fellow. Then he can release his parachute at a more sane speed. Also, he might have multistage 'chutes of varying sizes?
